2013: The Genesis of Telegram

14.1 Foundation of Telegram (August 2013)

Telegram was founded in 2013 by Pavel and Nikolai Durov as an independent, privacy-focused messaging platform. Pavel funded the venture using proceeds from his career and guided product design and strategic vision, while Nikolai designed the custom MTProto cryptographic protocol and underlying system architecture.

The official iOS client was released on August 14, 2013, followed by the alpha launch of the Android client in October 2013. Telegram was established with an operational commitment to fast message delivery, reliable multi-device cloud synchronization, and strong communication privacy.

14.2 Early Growth and Positioning

Telegram gained rapid international adoption following public interest in digital privacy and secure communications. The platform expanded its feature set with support for large group chats, channels for broadcasting, large file sharing (up to 2GB, and later 4GB for Premium users), and responsive desktop and web clients.
