The KPHP Compiler Paradigm
11.1 The PHP Interpretation Bottleneck
VKontakte was originally written in PHP, which allowed for rapid product iteration and feature delivery. However, as traffic grew exponentially, the overhead of interpreted PHP execution on millions of requests created significant CPU bottlenecks across server clusters.
11.2 The Development of KPHP
Rather than undertaking a multi-year rewrite of the entire codebase into another language, Nikolai Durov and the VK engineering team developed KPHP—a PHP compiler developed in the VK ecosystem that statically analyzes supported PHP code and generates C++ for native compilation into machine binary executables.

[High-Performance Server Binary Executable]KPHP was developed to reduce the runtime overhead associated with interpreting PHP by compiling supported PHP code into native binaries. This approach can improve execution efficiency for suitable workloads while retaining a PHP-oriented development model. The KPHP project was later open-sourced by VK developers.
